Nimbaya! - Revolutionizing African Dance and Drumming

Nimbaya!, a remarkable dance and drumming troupe from Guinea, showcases vibrant rhythms and colors, blending traditional instruments like djembe drums, kora, and balafon. Uniquely composed entirely of women, this group challenges the longstanding tradition that restricts drumming to men, inspiring both cultural pride and empowerment. Established in 1998, Nimbaya! draws its name from the Nimba mask, symbolizing fertility and female strength. The troupe not only performs but also runs a school in Conakry, training young women to become professional dancers and musicians.

With a mission to advocate for women's rights, Nimbaya! addresses critical issues such as female genital mutilation (FGM) in their performances, presenting powerful narratives that resonate with their audience.
